The Future Is Not Going To Be Easy, But Optimism Leads to Complacency.
Dungeons and Dragons, or the more up to date version, World of Warcraft have never attracted me. Perhaps its because I have been handling real weapons in the woods and have the skills of the fantasy Ranger, except my skills are real and not based on the roll of a dice. People tell me about forest spirits. Well fed, people, they are not talking about the gnawing hunger between winter and spring. They talk of Fairies, Not Baba Yaga, the death that stalks the land during famine. The See'rs of industrial capitalism spirits are optimistic of a growth future.
The dominant conversation about the future has no foundation in the reality of the science of current climate observations. Observations, not models.
"We stand on the precipice of profound shifts across every dimension of our existence, driven by the dual forces of degradation and innovation. The Earth’s deterioration, climate change, and the collapse of systems ill-equipped to navigate us through these exponential shifts underscore the urgency of our situation."
This is fundamentally dishonest, anthropogenic climate change is moving through the catastrophic phase, chaotic weather patterns and disrupted seasons and agriculture. The widespread flooding has had lasting effects on farmland delaying the growing of crops.
"The era ahead demands the fullest expression of our humanity, compelling us to evolve from mere being to becoming, and more critically, from Interbeing to Interbecoming. This evolution is not just a journey of personal transformation but a collective passage toward deeper interconnectedness."
These are so wordy, what they mean is mindfulness following the Zen model.
"In this pivotal moment, as we stand at the crossroads of degradation and renewal, the call to transition from Interbeing to Interbecoming has never been more urgent. It is a call to action for each of us to embody the resilience, awareness, and interconnectedness required to navigate the complexities of our times and to thrive as a collective force of hope and life."
This isn't a pivotal moment we missed that opportunity 50 years ago. We are now at the end of a 2 million year mass extinction. The last 300 years have been an acceleration of humans occupying their environment in the same manner that other species do this. The difference is that we can significantly change our environment and we have.
CO2 & CH4 are currently pouring into the atmosphere from melting Glaciers. Trump is pumping more oil. This Hopium is toxic positivity and its dangerous.
"This path also resonates with the four noble truths of Buddhism, accepting suffering and acknowledging that it is possible to cease suffering through the Buddha’s path."
When the Buddha was around there was no obvious ecological collapse. But the mega-fauna had already been driven to extinction and deforestation had already occurred during the Bronze Age, causing warming. There is nothing in the Buddhas path about stopping the use of Fossil Fuels or halting the 6th mass extinction. Perhaps this is just the reality of the situation and there is actually nothing we can do to stop the mass extinction. Acceptance of the reality of the situation is also Darma.
What does this have to do with D & D? Its about being rooted in reality.
